Standard Manuscript — 2.5mm

Standard student manuscript paper — 2.5mm staff line spacing (10mm staff height) and an empty clef gutter.

Print blank manuscript paper at true scale

Blank staff paper is five equally spaced lines with room on the left to write a clef, key, and time signature by hand. This generator prints student manuscript sheets at true scale: the default 2.5mm line spacing makes a 10mm staff. Every measurement is stored in millimeters, converts to inches when you toggle units, and exports at print scale.

Set page and spacing

  • Unit System: Work in millimeters or inches — every measurement updates when you switch.
  • Paper Size and Orientation: A4 (210×297mm) is the default. Switch to Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A3–A6, or Pocket, in portrait or landscape.
  • Staff Spacing: The gap between adjacent lines of one staff. The default 2.5mm makes a 10mm-tall staff (spacing × 4). The range is 1.75–4.0mm.
  • Between Staves: The gap from one staff to the next, not including staff height. Default 14mm.
  • Staves per Page: Auto fills the sheet with complete five-line staves. On the default A4 page that is 11 staves. Turn Auto off to set a count; values that no longer fit are clipped to the page.
  • Clef Gutter: Empty inset on the left for a handwritten clef, key, and time signature. Default 20mm. No vertical margin line is drawn.
  • Line Weight and Color: Choose 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.5mm options with a dedicated line-color palette. Check the live preview, then download PDF, PNG, or SVG.

Blank staves and true-scale spacing

  • Blank staves only: Clefs, notes, and accidentals are not drawn. The gutter stays empty so you can write them in.
  • US Letter and ISO sizes: Print letter-size staff paper or ISO sheets (A3–A6), plus Legal, Tabloid, and Pocket, in portrait or landscape.
  • Staves per page: Auto fills the sheet with complete five-line staves, or set a count by hand.
  • Five gallery templates: Default 2.5mm on white, cream/navy, or blush; compact 2.0mm on cool grey; beginner 3.5mm on sky blue. Colors and spacing are the same controls as the panel.
  • Three export formats: PDF for print, SVG for vector edits, and PNG for tablets and annotation apps.

Practice, dictation, and sketches

  • Theory homework: Print manuscript pages for melody dictation, interval drills, and sight-singing.
  • Composition drafts: Page margins and the empty gutter leave room for a title and handwritten clefs.
  • Classroom sets: Match compact, standard, or wide spacing so a whole class writes on the same ruling.

Choose line spacing

  • Standard manuscript: 2.5mm spacing (10mm staff) is the default for general student work.
  • Beginners: 3.5mm spacing (14mm staff) gives more room for noteheads and ledger-line practice.
  • Dense college work: 2.0mm spacing (8mm staff) fits more staves per page.
  • Leave the gutter: Keep about 20mm on the left so a handwritten treble or bass clef does not collide with the first notes.

When to pick staff paper instead of lined paper

  • Music ruling, not writing ruling: Lined paper is for prose. Staff paper groups five lines with a clef gutter so notation sits on a real staff.
  • True-scale spacing: Line spacing is stored in millimeters, so 2.5mm between staff lines prints at 2.5mm — not a scaled screenshot.
  • Prints in the browser: Pages render locally as you adjust settings, with nothing to install.

Student manuscript spacing

These values are student manuscript rulings used by this generator, not engraved orchestral staves (often around 7mm staff height). Staff height is always line spacing × 4 (five lines, four spaces).

PresetLine spacingStaff heightTypical use
Compact / college2.0mm8mmDense theory work, more staves per page
Standard manuscript2.5mm (default)10mmGeneral student manuscript paper
Beginner / wide3.5mm14mmEarly notation, large noteheads

Line spacing in the editor runs from 1.75mm to 4.0mm. On the default A4 sheet (15mm margins, 14mm between staves, 20mm clef gutter), Auto fits 11 staves. Other sizes fit fewer or more complete staves.

Manuscript print checks

  • Staff height is four spaces: Five lines create four gaps. Set line spacing, not overall staff height — 2.5mm spacing is a 10mm staff.
  • Auto fills complete staves: A leftover partial staff is never drawn. Manual counts that no longer fit are clipped to the page.
  • Gutter is empty space, not a margin rule: The left inset is for a handwritten clef. Increase the page left margin if you also need hole-punch clearance.
  • Line weight 0.2mm: Thinner 0.1mm engraving weights can disappear on office printers; 0.2mm stays readable under pencil.

Staff paper FAQ

Blank manuscript paper, spacing, and exports

What is the Staff Paper Generator?

It creates printable blank manuscript paper — five-line staves with an empty left gutter. You control spacing, margins, line weight, and colors, then export PDF, PNG, or SVG.

Does it draw clefs, key signatures, or notes?

No. Staves stay blank so you can write a clef, key, and time signature in the clef gutter. Notation fonts are not included.

What is the difference between staff paper, manuscript paper, and blank sheet music?

They are the same product family: empty five-line staves for handwriting music. Staff paper and manuscript paper are the usual names in schools; blank sheet music is the common search phrase. This tool prints that ruling without pre-drawn notation.

How is this different from lined paper?

Lined paper is evenly spaced writing rules. Staff paper groups five lines into a staff, with an empty clef gutter on the left. Use lined paper for notes and essays; use this tool when you need a music staff.

What staff line spacing should I use?

The default 2.5mm (10mm staff height) is a common student manuscript ruling. Use 3.5mm for beginners and 2.0mm for compact college sheets. Spacing is the gap between lines; staff height is spacing × 4.

Can I use millimeters and inches?

Yes. Toggle metric (mm) and imperial (inches) at the top of the settings panel. Values are stored in millimeters and converted for display.

What paper sizes are supported?

Paper sizes include A3, A4, Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A5, A6, and Pocket, in portrait or landscape. Auto stave count follows the page; on the default A4 sheet that is 11 staves.

What file formats can I export?

You can export as PDF (best for printing), SVG (editable vector), or PNG (raster image at 300 DPI).
